Corrupted Shield

We imported this shield, as well as the student's shields, to the UE Ancient treasures sample project, to test and render them.

Material setup in UE.
I use vertex color to mask the spirit movement (with WPO), and use a dithered pixel depth offset to fake translucency while keeping the model opaque.
This technique can mess the shadows a bit, but in this case it looks fine.

Corrupted Shield

Corrupted shield and sword wielded by the traitor prince Noctis, used to murder his tirant father. Imbued with unbeknown magic, it is rumoured to have seen both unspeakable horrors and the greatest of miracles. It sheds light when in darkness, and seems to devour the surrounding light when exposed to bright sources. It is unknown if the corruption spreads from withing the shield and/or from the sword, however there is still some light in the heart of the sword that seems to be in constant fight with the corruption.

Corrupted Shield rendered in Unreal Engine 5, made as a classroom exercise at Coco School.

Based on several references, mainly Paul Tobin’s Narnia Miraz shield (Weta workshop) and Terry Wei’s Blacklight project.
